The 2006 edition of Cheap Eats Toronto has hit the presses and will be lining book shelves around the city some time next week.... The book, also available online, will cost you just under 12 loonies before tax... or approx 2.5 breakfasts. If you're too cheap for even that, check out the Eat & Drink section or search "Cheap Eats" on blogTO.

So wander on over to your local bookstore and make them sell you one of each. Now. Stop reading and go. Now. :)

Almost Ready - Lahore Tikka House

Check it out! This is the new Lahore Tikka House finally unveiled, though not open yet.

As expected, it's huge. Two stories and a parking lot too.

I can't wait until they open for real. I wonder if they will still have the wonderful patio in the summer, or if those railing on the roof mean they'll have it up there.  I miss summer meals on their patio surrounded by twinkling lights and colourful billowing fabrics.

Love Gyros & Lineups?

Messini is celebrating their 4th anniversary and new renovations by holding Gyros Mania from noon until 10pm on Thursday April 26th. Messini will be selling their Authentic Greek Gyros for for only $2.  Yes, two dollars.

Cheapeater S describes Messini's  Gyros as "fries inside a honking-huge gyros-stuffed pita", and she's not kidding.

With almost 600 Facebookers confirmed, and another 350 "maybe attending", you can be pretty sure there will be lineups all day.

Proceeds are being split between , a non profit organization dedicated to helping Toronto's homeless youth currently "celebrating" it's own 25th anniversary, and the Hellenic Ball Hockey Team to help them attend the world championships in Germany this summer.

There will be entertainment held throughout the day including a live Greek band, belly dancers and a balloon pop raffle with hundreds of prizes and your chance to win $500.00.

Thanks for the tip to the   (yes, restaurant fan groups are starting up on too)

The Skylark's New Facade.

After years of threats of renovations, unfinished drywall and most recently months of being closed, the Skylark on Gerrard East is open again with a shiny new facade and twice the seating.

The buffet prices remain unchanged from the last edition of CETO: Lunch Buffet for $8.99 and Dinner Buffet for $10.99, still a deal for all that tummy-rubbing goodness.

We plan to drop in to check out the fancy new space in the next week or so, but if you've been in already we'd love to hear what you think of the new shiny Skylark.

Quick Notes & Gossip

The Golden Mile (or the 3rd floor of 421 Dundas W) is closed… One of the helpful cart ladies told me that Yiu Wah (on the 2nd floor) is renovating the space and moving upstairs by the end of October. No info on what's going to go into the 2nd floor location. Hopefully it will be another dim sum place, 'cause it would be a shame to lose all that old-school chinese restaurant ambiance to a dollar store. Azul Rice Bar Menu in the window at 319 Augusta

Lahore Biryani House is under new management and is being renovated… No details yet on when they will be reopening. Sadly this means they aren't going to be in the next edition of cheapeats because they'll be too green.

While Azul is closed, they may be opening a rice bar in Kensington Market across from Supermarket. This gossip is based solely on two printed pages taped up in the window at 319 Augusta.  One - a menu titled "Rice Bar" and the other - a full page Azul logo... but hey, we've found great new spots based on way less info than that.

Oh, and the 5 Alarm Diner looks like it has closed. I heard a rumour from PB that this might be teh case so I called to get the dirt.  When no one answered the phone or returned my calls, I swung by, only to find the windows completely papered over. How much does that suck?
