Yes it's true. Not only has Amato closed it's flagship location on Queen West, but The Friendly Thai is taking over. The Friendly Thai has already closed their Queen West location and are moving about a block further west. With a "Grand Buffet" no less.
After 18 years serving burgers, steak sandwiches and some excellent fries to Ryerson students and the late late night crowds around Church & Gerrard, the Mr.Tasty is closed. In fact, it's already in the middle of an overhaul to become a sushi joint.
John of Mr.Tasty left this note saying goodbye and thanking his customers.
I will miss the steak sandwiches, fries, cheap beer and watching the neighbourhood drop by for a beer.
The New Tivoli Restaurant has been serving comfort food at Dufferin and St. Clair since 1933. It's also been a major location for my photography ~ I've been recording the ordinary and extraordinary goings-on within its walls for the past few years.
When the announcement came that the Tiv would be closing its doors forever this Sunday Oct. 8, the neighbourhood went into mourning after the initial shock subsided. The restaurant has been a social hub of the area for decades and its closing will affect many, especially the retirees that have called it their second home for years.
In tribute, I've printed out select Tivoli memories and taped them to the walls of the restaurant. Feel free to drop by, check out the pictures and celebrate the end of a neighbourhood era.
The New Tivoli Restaurant 1160 St. Clair Avenue West At Dufferin Thursday to Saturday 7 to 7 Sunday 7 to 3
The Amato at Yonge & Eglington is now Madanto. The Yonge & College location has started distributing it's own fliers, with no reference to the rest of the locations and more than a year ago stopped using the centralized number for deliveries. And then there was last year's pickets.
The Golden Mile (or the 3rd floor of 421 Dundas W) is closed… One of the helpful cart ladies told me that Yiu Wah (on the 2nd floor) is renovating the space and moving upstairs by the end of October. No info on what's going to go into the 2nd floor location. Hopefully it will be another dim sum place, 'cause it would be a shame to lose all that old-school chinese restaurant ambiance to a dollar store.
Lahore Biryani House is under new management and is being renovated… No details yet on when they will be reopening. Sadly this means they aren't going to be in the next edition of cheapeats because they'll be too green.
While Azul is closed, they may be opening a rice bar in Kensington Market across from Supermarket. This gossip is based solely on two printed pages taped up in the window at 319 Augusta. One - a menu titled "Rice Bar" and the other - a full page Azul logo... but hey, we've found great new spots based on way less info than that.
Oh, and the 5 Alarm Dinerlooks like it has closed. I heard a rumour from PB that this might be teh case so I called to get the dirt. When no one answered the phone or returned my calls, I swung by, only to find the windows completely papered over. How much does that suck?
